What to expect in your first couples therapy session?

You may find it difficult to open up to a stranger about your most personal struggles and vulnerabilities. In this article, I want to share with you what to expect in your first couples therapy session with (EFT) , how you may be feeling and thinking, and what are the benefits of this therapy.

What is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)?

Emotionally Focused Therapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on emotions and attachment in relationships. The aim of EFT is to help people with emotional problems. It is based on the idea that we all have a fundamental need for emotional connection and support from others, especially in close relationships.

The first EFT session can be an intimidating experience for couples. It can feel like opening Pandora's box of emotions and vulnerabilities that have been buried deep inside for a long time. As an EFT therapist, I understand this and I will help you navigate through these feelings with care and compassion.

The therapist will ask you and your partner a series of questions to better understand your relationship, your communication style and your needs for connection. Working together will help to identify key patterns in the relationship, particularly those that may be due to unfulfilled emotional needs. This is the foundation of EFT, as it helps to get to know you and your partner on a deeper level.

As you dive deeper into the session, you may begin to feel vulnerable and emotionally overwhelmed. This is completely normal and expected. In EFT, we believe that emotions are the key to healing relationships. By allowing yourself to feel and express your feelings, you open the door to deeper connection and understanding with your partner.

I will guide you through various exercises and interventions designed to improve emotional connection and communication. This may include exercises to help you recognize and express your feelings, as well as exercises to help you understand your partner's perspective. Throughout the session, I will provide feedback and support, helping you to work through difficult feelings and patterns in the relationship.

My intention is to create a safe and supportive environment where you and your partner can be vulnerable and honest with each other. This can be a scary process, but incredibly rewarding at the same time. By opening up and sharing your feelings with your partner, you are taking the first step towards building a stronger and healthier relationship.
